On Sunday 22nd April 2018 (very) early in the morning Worry Less Design got on the road and headed down the M3 to set up a stand at the ABP Southampton Marathon/Half Marathon and 10k.

This is a brief overview of what the event was like not only from an exhibitor’s point of view but also from a runner’s point of view as my dear beloved came along for the ride (and the run) too.

Runderful Quote

From the Worry Less Design point of view, most importantly – the sun was out!  The forecast was fine, a hefty 20 degrees, warmer than 2 weeks before, no more thermals under leggings, bobble hats, gloves and hand warmers, and we were down to a balmy 2 layers each and we very nearly at one point complained about being too hot.

Just as importantly, the event was planned amazingly by Rees Leisure, the team were super organised and they set up a great little shopping village for runners and spectators alike.  There were 8000 runners and for once an appropriate number of toilets, everything was well signposted and finish lanes/baggage drop and all other logistics were spot on.  Thank you to Kate and her team for being so brilliant.  We met loads of amazing people and had a really great (and successful) day.

Dear beloved ran the half marathon purely because we were going to be there and he didn’t need to pay for bag storage.  He only did one long training run and smashed his Half Marathon and 10k PB at the event…he is just that kind of awesome guy (to be fair he did run regularly all winter whereas I hung up my shoes and vowed to drink gin instead until the sun came out).  I asked him for his opinion of the race and he very helpfully said – really good but very hot, which actually isn’t really helpful for anyone at all… so I asked again and again until he actually thought about his answer.  This was his feedback….

“The support was amazing, there were people all around the course with banners and cheering runners on, and there was a ukulele band and a great atmosphere, kind of how you would imagine London Marathon to be like.  The course was mostly traffic free which is always a bonus, key highlight was running through St Mary's stadium, home of Southampton FC (apparently it’s cool for any boy to run through a football stadium) and lowlight was running over the bridge, which was really, really long and he had to just work streetlight to streetlight to get over it…and then after a little loop you have to run back over it again which was very hard”.

But overall he loved it and will definitely be signing up again next year.

We loved it too, it’s a brilliant event and runners are a super happy bunch (once they have finished their races (!) We hope to be back again next year.  RUNDERFUL See you there!
